Training with ASTS & EDEXCEL
In order to obtain an SIA licence you will need to show that you are trained to the right level. This applies to front-line staff only.
ASTS can now offer the full Approved award through Edexcel.
In setting standards for training we have taken into account the changing roles of those already employed in the industry and the requirements for new skills and knowledge.
To get the SIA qualification for CCTV operators you will need to attend a training course and take and pass an exam. The course may be delivered over 4 days or during weekends and/or evening sessions.
Training is delivered as follows:
Knowledge and practical based training and assessment (30 hours)
- Role and responsibilities of CCTV operator and other CCTV staff
- Codes of practice, operational procedures and guidelines
- CCTV equipment and its operation
- Control room communications and access control
- Legislation
- Dealing with incidents
- Surveillance techniques
- Fire and emergency procedures
- Health and safety
If you already have some form of UK qualification in CCTV operation it may mean that you are exempt from all or part of the Approved training.
Previous Training
CCTV Operators who are currently in work in a CCTV (PSS) Control Room, and have successfully achieved an award/qualification in a CCTV Operation discipline, that has been accredited by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) as part of the National Qualifications Framework may be eligible for an exemption from the Approved qualification for a CCTV licence.
The following are known examples of qualifications which fall into this category:
- NVQ Level 2 in Security, Safety and Loss Prevention (unit certification must include Units 12 and 13) - SITO/City & Guilds
- NVQ Level 2 in Security, Safety and Loss Prevention (unit certification must include Units 12 and 13) - Edexcel
- NVQ Level 2 in Providing Security Services (unit certification must include Units 13, 14 and 15) - SITO/City & Guilds
- NVQ Level 2 in Providing Security Services (unit certification must include Units 13, 14 and 15) - Edexcel
Please note: the awarding body will require some form of additional learning and assessment before certification can be gained.
CCTV Operators who do not hold an accredited qualification such as those described above, but:
- Currently work in a CCTV (PSS) Control Room and/or
- Hold a certificate for completion of formal CCTV control room training, that has been issued in the last 3 years
may be able to gain some credit or accreditation of prior learning (APL) against the practical skills aspect of the core competency training and assessment.
CCTV Operators in this category will be required to take the knowledge based examination of the accredited Level 2 qualification in CCTV Operations (PSS).
Due to the evolving role of CCTV Operators, and legislative updates, it is recommended that all CCTV Operators who fall into this category undergo refresher training (of a minimum of six hours), prior to undertaking this assessment.
All CCTV (PSS) operators will be required to take the knowledge based examination of the accredited Level 2 qualification in CCTV Operations (PSS) (unless evidence for 100% APL can be provided) and, due to the evolving role of CCTV operators and legislative updates, it is recommended that all operators undergo refresher training prior to undertaking this assessment.
