RAF Sergeant Gains Paramedic of the Year Award in Afghanistan
Sgt Rachel McDonald has been awarded Paramedic of the Year after her patrol came upon a conflict scene in Afghanistan. There wew 26 casualties to whom she gave assistance and treatment.
The incident took place under fire from Taliban forces forcing paramedics to be deposited on the ground whilst the support helicopters were forced to withdraw. She helped with treatment and evacuation back to British medical facilities and was back in the air again within an hour.
Her calmness and professionalism under fire stood out for the panel who said that the award was thoroughly deserved.
