The Security Industry Authority (SIA) is the body of the British government which is responsible for the licensing and regulation of private security firms, including door supervision, wheel-clamping, security guarding, private investigation and security consultancy sectors. Learn more about the SIA.

The SIA National Certificate for Door Supervisors is a qualification that has been designed to meet the requirements of existing registration schemes and to get ready for the new national standards that are being brought into play across the country by the SIA.

In order to obtain an SIA licence you will need to show that you are trained to an appropriate standard. This applies to front-line staff only.

In setting these standards for training the SIA has considered the changing roles of those people already employed in the security industry and the need for new skills and knowledge. The training includes conflict management and communication, which have been identified as basic skills needed by the industry.

The SIA realises how important it is for those in the security industry to be professional and adept at their work and therefore it is vital for a structured programme of training to be in place.

A typical training course for all Security Officers on an SIA recognised certificate course would consists of two parts as detailed in the following pages-

SIA Certificate Part 1

SIA Certificate Part 2

From 20th March 2006 Licenses or Approved Contractor Certificates were legally required for most security companies and staff. Failure to comply is a criminal offence, and without a License or Approved Contractor Certificate it will be illegal to offer or supply many security services.

The Approved Contractor Scheme is established to offer companies the chance to simplify their licensing and to save money. The Approved Contractor Scheme shows that a company is competent, well-managed and has the ability to provide a high standard of service.

Other specialist SIA recognised training can be provided to meet the specific requirements of the client and to develop the skills of the security officers and some typical examples may include:

  • First Aid – in accordance with the requirements of Health & Safety at Work Act;
  • Fire Wardens – trained by the relevant fire service;
  • Health & Safety – accredited by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health;
  • Retail Security – for shopping precincts and department stores;
  • Guard Dog Training – as specified by NASDU (the National Association of Security Dog Users) in accordance with the Guard Dog Act;
  • Such other training as may be required and relevant to a particular site or Assignment.
